Is it Japanese whisky?

Does not meet the JSLMA standard, usually because some of the liquid was distilled outside Japan. Several producers say so openly — this is a statement about the category a bottle belongs to, not about its quality.

How it tastes

51.4% in a 500ml brick of a bottle, and the best value in the category by some distance. It is also not Japanese whisky by the JSLMA standard: Nikka owns Ben Nevis in Scotland and this blend draws on it. Nikka says so plainly. It does not make the whisky worse — it is excellent — but if you are paying a Japanese-whisky premium for it abroad, you are paying for a category it does not belong to.
