A shortlist, not a popularity list
Best Japanese whisky to start with
The best bottle depends on what you want to taste and what you can actually buy. This shortlist starts with our own ratings, then shows the Japanese shelf reality beside them.
Our highest-rated bottles
Ratings are editorial and scored consistently across the archive. They are not an average of online reviews.

A high rating is not useful if the bottle only appears in a lottery. These are the top-rated bottles currently marked as ordinary shelf stock.

Catalog record How to choose
If you want a classic Japanese single malt, start with Yamazaki or Hakushu. If you want a highball-friendly bottle, Toki is the more practical buy. If you want a high-strength blend with a different shape, Nikka From The Barrel is compelling even though it does not meet the JSLMA Japanese whisky standard.
Use the availability label before using the word “best”. In Japan, allocated and lottery-only bottles can be harder to buy than their overseas price suggests.
